John Deakin (1912-1972) was an English photographer renowned for his portrayal of Francis Bacon's Soho circle. His work inspired several of Bacon's notable paintings. Although he spent time in Paris and Rome capturing street life, he had limited stable employment, primarily with Vogue from 1947 to 1954. Initially aiming to be a painter, he turned to painting in the 1960s as his photographic career faded. Struggling with alcoholism, Deakin passed away in obscurity, but gained posthumous recognition through exhibitions and publications from the 1980s onwards.
