John Dear, born on August 15, 1959, is an American Catholic priest, peace activist, advocate for Christian vegetarianism, writer, and lecturer. A former Jesuit, he has been arrested over 75 times for his nonviolent civil disobedience against war, injustice, and nuclear weapons, viewing these actions as part of his 'consistent life ethics.' Dear has been nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize, including a nomination in January 2008 by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and again in 2015 alongside Leo Ribello.
