He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1963 for his research on synapses. He shared the award with Sir Alan Lloyd Hodgkin and Sir Andrew Huxley for their experiments and mathematical researches related to the action potential. Eccles was a devout Catholic and was committed to his faith throughout his life.
