John Edwards is an American lawyer and former politician who served as a senator from North Carolina. Born on June 10, 1953, in Seneca, South Carolina, he ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 but lost to Barack Obama. Edwards also lost the 2004 Democratic nomination to John Kerry, who later chose him as his running mate against George W. Bush. His career was marred by a scandal involving an affair with Rielle Hunter and the secret birth of a child while his wife Elizabeth battled cancer. Elizabeth sought divorce in 2010 before passing away.
