Fitzsimmons worked in broadcasting for over 40 years and served as rector of the Pontifical Scots College in Rome. He was recognized for his erudition and compassionate nature, often voicing critical opinions on the Catholic Church hierarchy. He passed away on May 17, 2008, in Gourock.
