John Garvey was an influential American musician and academic known for his remarkable contributions to jazz education. He played viola in the Walden String Quartet for 23 seasons and introduced a jazz curriculum at the University of Illinois, where he also created and led its Jazz Big Band. The band earned numerous accolades in collegiate jazz festivals and was selected by the state department to tour the USSR and Eastern Europe in 1969. Many of his students achieved notable success in music and academia.
