John Gatenby Bolton (June 5, 1922 – July 6, 1993) was a British-Australian astronomer pivotal in the development of radio astronomy. He played a crucial role in demonstrating that transient radio sources are either galaxies or remnants of supernovae, not stars. Bolton also contributed to the discovery of quasars and the galactic center. He served as the inaugural director of the Parkes radio telescope in Australia and established the Owens Valley radio observatory in California. His students held management positions in many radio observatories worldwide, with one winning a Nobel Prize. Bolton is regarded as a key figure in the advancement of astronomy in Australia.
