John George Sclater is a Scottish-American geophysicist born on June 17, 1940, in Edinburgh. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and Cambridge, earning his Ph.D. in geophysics in 1966. Sclater was involved in early plate tectonics research and participated in oceanographic expeditions with the RV Argo. He has held positions at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, MIT, and the University of Texas at Austin. He received notable awards, including the Walter H. Bucher Medal and is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the National Academy of Sciences.
