He earned a BSc in Zoology and a PhD in 1966 from the University of Aberdeen, where his research focused on the Common Redshank. His notable projects include studying Eurasian Oystercatchers' foraging patterns at the River Exe, where he applied agent-based modelling to ecological relationships. Although he retired in 2002, he has held honorary roles at various universities, including Exeter and Bournemouth.
