John H. Schmertmann is a prominent American civil engineer specializing in geotechnics, born on December 2, 1928, in New York City. He earned his Bachelor's degree from MIT in 1950 and a Master's from Northwestern University in 1952, followed by a Ph.D. in 1962. He had a significant academic career at the University of Florida, where he is now Professor Emeritus. Among his contributions to geotechnical engineering, he introduced a new method for estimating the soil stiffness modulus via cone penetration testing in 1970. He has received various awards and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
