John Hawkes (1925 - 1998) was an American novelist born in Stamford, Connecticut. He moved to Harvard in 1934 and later worked as an ambulance driver in Italy and Germany, experiences that influenced his debut novel, 'The Cannibal,' published in 1949. This work marked the beginning of the post-World War II literary generation. Hawkes returned to Harvard to teach English from 1955 to 1958 and later worked at Brown University until his retirement in 1988. His last novel, 'The Irish Eye,' was published in 1997. He passed away on May 15, 1998, in Providence, Rhode Island.
