He achieved notable successes in his athletic career, including winning a silver medal at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. Hawkins also placed fourth at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali and ninth at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. He secured a bronze medal at the Universiade in 1973 and finished fifth at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. His personal best jump of 2.18 meters was recorded on June 27, 1973, in Toronto.
