John Winslow Irving, born John Wallace Blunt Jr. on March 2, 1942, is an American-Canadian novelist and screenwriter renowned for his impactful works. He gained worldwide fame after the success of his novel 'The World According to Garp' in 1978. His best-selling books include 'The Hotel New Hampshire', 'The Cider House Rules', 'A Prayer for Owen Meany', and 'A Widow for One Year'. In 2000, he won an Oscar for the adapted screenplay of 'The Cider House Rules'. Five of his novels have been adapted into films, with many stories set in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he was born.
