John Keith Wells was a United States Marine who served during World War II. He is recognized for leading one of the most decorated infantry platoons from a single engagement and was the first to raise a flag over Iwo Jima. His platoon, 3rd Platoon of Easy Company in the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division, became famous for attacking Mount Suribachi and successfully raising the first flag on its summit.
