John Kennedy Toole (December 17, 1937 – March 26, 1969) was an American novelist from New Orleans, best known for his posthumously published novel, A Confederacy of Dunces, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981. Despite having received acclaim for his writing, Toole faced rejection during his lifetime, leading to struggles with paranoia and depression. He wrote The Neon Bible and taught English at several colleges. His character Ignatius J. Reilly is partly based on himself and reflects his experiences, depicting the culture of New Orleans.
