John L. Hennessy, born in 1953, is an American computer scientist and academic. He is the co-founder of MIPS Computer Systems Inc and served as the tenth president of Stanford University. Hennessy earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Villanova University and his master's and Ph.D. in computer science from Stony Brook University. He joined Stanford's faculty in 1977, became the director of the Stanford Computer Systems Laboratory, and also chaired the Computer Science Department. He has held significant roles in both academia and industry, including serving on boards for major corporations.
