John Mathieson Dodds OBE was a Scottish electrical engineer born on September 13, 1905, and educated at the University of Aberdeen and Technische Hochschule, Aachen, where he earned a Dr Ing. in 1933. He contributed significantly to World War II by developing high-power thermionic valves for radar equipment at Metropolitan-Vickers. His work in the Research Department was vital for the Chain Home system, enhancing Britain's defense capabilities. In recognition of his service, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1944 Birthday Honours.
