John David McAfee (September 18, 1945 – June 23, 2021) was a British-American computer programmer and businessman known for founding McAfee, the software company, in 1987. He led the company until his retirement in 1994, successfully releasing the first commercial antivirus software. McAfee's company became a prominent name in cybersecurity and was acquired by Intel in 2011, yet continued to use the McAfee brand. His net worth peaked at $100 million in 2007 but suffered losses due to investments during the great recession of 2007–2008.
