John McDowell is a South African philosopher born on March 7, 1942. He has served as a fellow at Oxford University and is currently a professor at the University of Pittsburgh. His most influential works center on the philosophy of mind and language, but he has also engaged with metaphysics, epistemology, ancient philosophy, and moral philosophy. In 2010, he was awarded the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation's Distinguished Achievement Award. He is a fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the British Academy.
