He served as Deputy Commander and led the South Belfast Brigade while also holding political office as the leader of the Ulster Democratic Party from 1981 to 1987. His tenure was marked by a violent campaign against republican figures, which ultimately led to his assassination by the Provisional IRA in December 1987.
