John O. Hertler is an American Thoroughbred horse trainer born on September 17, 1950, in Ridgewood, Queens. He started working for Hall of Fame trainer Phil Johnson at age fifteen, staying for thirteen years before training independently in 1978. He trained notable horses such as Ballindaggin, who won the 1988 Molson Export Challenge, and Slew the Dragon, the winner of the 1988 Hollywood Derby. Hertler is particularly famed for training the Hall of Fame colt Slew o' Gold, earning recognition with multiple awards including the Eclipse Award.
