John O. Voll is an American historian and Islamic scholar born on April 20, 1936, in Hudson, Wisconsin. He is a professor emeritus of Islamic history at Georgetown University. Voll earned his BA in history from Dartmouth College and an MA in Middle Eastern studies from Harvard University. After completing his PhD in history and Middle Eastern studies at Harvard, he taught at the University of New Hampshire before joining Georgetown in 1995, where he also served as director of the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. He specializes in modern Islamic history.
