John P. Campo, Sr. was an American Thoroughbred racehorse trainer renowned for his training of notable horses, particularly the 1981 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, Pleasant Colony. Born in East Harlem, New York, he trained a total of 1,431 winners during his three-decade career. Tragically, in 1986, a fire resulted in the loss of many horses, severely impacting him. Campo retired in 1996 after suffering a stroke and lived in Hewlett, New York until his death in 2005. His legacy continued through his sons involved in horse racing.
