John Henry Poelker (1913–1990) was the 40th mayor of St. Louis, serving from 1973 to 1977 as a Democrat. He previously held the position of city comptroller for 10 years and began his political career as the youngest assessor in 1953. Notably, he oversaw the controversial demolition of Pruitt-Igoe during his mayoral term. In recognition of his contributions to the city's revitalization, an award was named after him after his retirement. His brothers were also influential figures in the Catholic Church.
