He played as a prop, appearing in 16 games for Cardiff in the 1981/82 season before joining Newport, where he played 188 matches. Rawlins toured South Africa in 1982 and was part of the 1987 Rugby World Cup squad, although he did not see any action in the tournament. He ended his playing career at Swansea, where he earned 2 caps.
