He was a member of the Labor Party and served in the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1983 to 1989, representing Mandurah. After his parliamentary career, he worked in various consulting and managerial roles for state and federal governments. Additionally, he served as the Administrator of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands from 1992 to 1994. Read was a schoolteacher before entering politics and is married with five children, including a son who followed in his political footsteps.
