John S. McCain, Jr. (1911-1981) was an American naval officer and admiral who served in numerous conflicts from the 1940s to the 1970s. He commanded U.S. naval forces in the Pacific and was known for his strong anti-communism stance and calls for a powerful navy. During WWII, he led submarine operations and received several honors including the Silver Star. As the commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam, he supported Nixon's policies and was influential in U.S. military actions in Cambodia and Laos. He retired in 1972 and was part of a notable naval family.
