John S. Waugh (April 25, 1929 – August 22, 2014) was an American chemist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He developed the average Hamiltonian theory and its application to extending NMR spectroscopy, which was previously limited to liquids. Waugh authored ANTIOPE, a free general-purpose NMR spectrum and dynamics simulator for Windows. He utilized systems of coupled spins to illustrate general requirements for equilibrium and ergodicity in isolated systems. In 1974, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in the chemistry section and received the Wolf Prize in Chemistry in 1983/84.
