John Shepherd-Barron was a Scottish inventor born on June 23, 1925, who created the first automated teller machine (ATM). He was inspired to develop this idea while sitting in a bathroom, unable to access his bank. His concept was based on a chocolate vending machine. He sold the idea to a Barclays executive, leading to the launch of the first ATM in London. Over 40 years later, there are now 1.7 million ATMs worldwide, revolutionizing access to cash. He passed away on May 15, 2010, at the age of 84.
