John M Shifflett was an American jazz musician, known for his skills on the double bass, as well as being an arranger, composer, and educator. Born on March 22, 1953, in Dubuque, Iowa, he graduated from Iowa State University in 1976. He was a prominent player in jazz bands at the University of Iowa and later performed with notable acts including Frankie Avalon and Dinah Shore. Shifflett moved to San Jose in 1987 and dedicated his last teaching tenure to San Jose State University until his passing on April 27, 2017.
