John A. Shirreffs is an American Thoroughbred racehorse trainer born on June 1, 1945, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. A Vietnam War veteran, he started training Thoroughbreds in 1978 and has achieved notable successes, including winning the 2005 Kentucky Derby with Giacomo and training champion Zenyatta. He became the first trainer to win both the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic and Classic in the same year in 2009. Shirreffs grew up around horses and initially worked as a yearling breaker before establishing his training career.
