John Somers Payne was an Irish sport sailor and double Olympian, known for his contributions to sailing in Cork Harbour. He competed for the Irish National sailing teams, participating in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne and the 1960 Olympics off Naples. In his first Olympic appearance, he placed 16th in the Men's Finn single-handed dinghy, and he finished 18th in the same event four years later. Payne, referred to as 'Somers', was regarded as an inspiration, particularly in his home village of Crosshaven.
