John Spencer was an English painter and sculptor born on April 25, 1928, in Farnborough, Hampshire. He studied art in various institutions across the UK, France, and Italy. Noteworthy for his wood carvings, Spencer gained recognition during his time at Bradfield College. He began his artistic career in earnest after serving in the army, studying sculpture and painting. His first solo exhibition occurred in 1964. Spencer converted to Catholicism in 1955 and spent years living as an artist in Rome and Assisi. He passed away on March 16, 2005, following a brief illness.
