John Arthur Spenkelink was an American murderer born on March 29, 1949, in Le Mars, Iowa, who became the second person executed in Florida after the death penalty was reinstated. Spenkelink was a drifter and committed murder after picking up hitchhiker Joseph J. Szymankiewicz. He shot Szymankiewicz in a hotel in Tallahassee, Florida, and claimed self-defense. His case drew national attention regarding the death penalty and issues of guilt and social justice. He was executed in the electric chair on May 25, 1979.
