John Meredith Steel is a former New Zealand freestyle swimmer, born on October 27, 1972. He competed in two consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1992. Steel won silver medals in the 4 × 100 m and 4 × 200 m Freestyle events at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and captured a bronze medal in the Men's 4x200 Freestyle Relay Team at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. He also won the 1990 'Open' ASA National Championship for the 100 meters freestyle. Currently, he works for Air NZ as a flight attendant.
