John Stroppa was a Canadian football halfback who played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1949 to 1951. He won the Dr. Beattie Martin Trophy for Canadian rookie of the year in 1949 and participated in the 1950 Grey Cup, known as the Mud Bowl. After retiring due to a kidney injury, he officiated amateur games before becoming a CFL referee, officiating 250 games over 15 years. He later served as the CFL's supervisor of officials for 11 years. Stroppa passed away in Edmonton on May 7, 2017.
