John Thorndike Alexander is an American historian specializing in Russian history and an honorary professor at the University of Kansas. Born on January 18, 1940, in Cooperstown, New York, he completed his PhD at Indiana University in 1966. He taught at the University of Kansas from 1966 to 2005. Alexander has published extensively on 18th-century Russian history, including works on the Pugachev Rebellion, Catherine II, and the Russian Imperial government. In the 1960s, he became one of the few Western historians to access Soviet historical archives.
