John Ernest Tranter was an influential Australian poet, publisher, and editor born on April 29, 1943. He authored over twenty poetry books and co-created the ABC radio program 'Books and Writing' with Jan Garrett. Tranter founded the online literary magazine 'Jacket' in 1997, which he managed until 2010 when he transferred it to the University of Pennsylvania. He received a Creative Arts Fellowship from the Australia Council in 1990, and was recognized by fellow Australian poets for his innovative contributions to poetry.
