He overcame polio at a young age to study mining and engineering geology in Belgium before earning his Ph.D. in geology from Stanford University in 1937. Verhoogen became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he contributed significantly to geochronology and plate tectonics. He authored an influential textbook on petrology and was recognized with several prestigious awards throughout his career, including membership in the National Academy of Sciences.
