John Woolford, born Karl Hermann Scherchen on May 30, 1920, in Berlin, was the muse and first romantic interest of composer Benjamin Britten. He fled to England in 1934 to escape Nazism, where he developed a close friendship with Britten. The two exchanged letters during his internment in Canada during WWII. After changing his name, he married Pauline Woolford in 1943 and emigrated to Australia in the 1980s. Woolford inspired several of Britten's works and was featured in various media about Britten's life, showcasing their enduring connection despite circumstances.
