John Milne Checketts was a notable New Zealand flying ace in World War II, credited with destroying over 14 enemy aircraft. Born in 1912 in Invercargill, he joined the RNZAF in 1940 and served in several squadrons, including as a commander of No. 485 Squadron. He was shot down over France but rescued by the French Resistance. Post-war, he commanded RNZAF air bases and established a successful aerial topdressing company before retiring in 1954. He engaged in conservation work and passed away in 2006 at the age of 94.
