He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, where he commanded battalions and trained South Vietnamese troops. Over his military career, he rose through the ranks, eventually leading the 2nd Army from 1985 to 1987. After retiring in 1988, Johnston focused on his local church community in San Antonio. He passed away from cancer on September 5, 2012, and was buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
