He studied physics at the University of Amsterdam, completing his PhD under Isaac Silvera focusing on Bose-Einstein Condensation. Walraven developed a method of evaporative cooling to create atomic hydrogen gas, aiming for it to become a quantum gas. He later transitioned to laser science, becoming a key figure in achieving Bose-Einstein Condensate and was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society in 2005.
