Johannes (Joop) Waasdorp was a Dutch writer and journalist born in Amsterdam on April 28, 1917. He grew up in Zaandam and Amsterdam and worked for United Press. During World War II, he was in the resistance and was captured, serving as forced labor in Bremen. Post-war, he worked as a translator and emigrated to Australia in 1956. He returned to the Netherlands in 1962, writing and translating Orwell's works. His books reflect his Australian experiences, earning him the Marianne Philipsprijs in 1974. He died in Valencia on September 4, 1988.
