He achieved the rank of lieutenant general and served as the first Commander in Chief of the Ecuadorian Air Force under the government of Rafael Correa. Gabela is notably recognized for his criticism against the purchase of Dhruv helicopters and was assassinated on December 29, 2010, in Guayaquil, with suspicions that his murder was related to his denunciation.
