Jorge Ignacio Hernández Camacho, popularly known as Mono Hernández or El sabio Hernández, was a notable thinker, scientist, and professor at the Universidad Nacional in Colombia. Born on January 17, 1935, in Bogotá and passing away on September 15, 2001, he is considered the father of national parks in Colombia. His contributions include establishing protected areas and categorizing Colombia's biogeographic units. He founded the Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas at INDERENA, which later became the Ministry of Environment. His work significantly advanced the understanding of Colombian biodiversity and biomes.
