He participated in the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus and held several leadership positions within the Danish Army, ultimately serving as a major general and chief of the Home Guard from 1993 until his retirement in 1998. Nilsson passed away on December 22, 2020, and was interred at Hørsholm Cemetery.
