He began his career in 1980 at Atlantic City Race Course and soon became a leading rider, notably at Hialeah Park, Gulfstream Park, and Calder Race Course. Vélez gained recognition for winning multiple prestigious races including the Maryland Million Classic and the United Nations Handicap. He is known for his performance in the Dubai World Cup and has secured numerous stakes races, earning his induction into the Calder Race Course Hall of Fame in 1997.
