José Alberto Hermógenes de Souza was a Brazilian public health physician born in Salvador on October 1, 1944. He was a prominent figure in the Brazilian Health Reform, which led to the establishment of the Unified Health System (SUS) approved by the National Constituent Assembly in 1987-1988. He served as Secretary of Health in Bahia and as the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Health under Ministers Roberto Santos and Jamil Haddad. He passed away in Salvador on August 22, 2021.
