He studied law and economics at the universities of Deusto and Valladolid and worked in the private sector while researching Basque culture. He faced political persecution during Franco's regime. Arana held various roles at the Real Academia de la Lengua Vasca, became a full academician in 1988, and was recognized with awards like the Premio Manuel Lekuona before his death on April 27, 2011.
